Additional Learning Needs (ALN)
Some children will require additional help to ensure they get the right level of educational support.
The Additional Learning Needs Code (2021) was issued under the Additional Learning Needs and Education Tribunal (Wales) Act 2018. These together, provide the statutory system for meeting the Additional Learning Needs (ALN) of children and young people.
“A person has ALN if he or she has a learning difficulty or disability (whether the learning difficulty or disability arises from a medical condition or otherwise) which calls for Additional Learning Provision (ALP)”.
“ALP for a person aged three or over means educational or training provision that is additional to, or different from, that made generally for others of the same age.”
The new legislation for ALN will bring about several main changes for ALN.
It:
Brings together all current systems into a new, single system for ALN
Is pupil centred, where young people and their parents are completely involved in decision making
Provides learners with the same type of statutory plan (Individual Development Plan or IDP), irrespective of age or setting
Improves transition between settings
Allows further Welsh language provision
Is a fair and transparent system for all
Our ALNCo (Additional Learning Needs Co-ordinator) is Mrs Gallan, who works across both schools in our Federation. Mrs Gallan’s role is to work with staff to coordinate the support we provide for children with ALN and for children who need targeted provision.
Whether pupils require short-term help or support throughout their learning life, we can offer assistance based on their needs. We believe that each and every child should be given the chance to succeed.
If you would like more information, please call the school to arrange an informal chat with Mrs Gallan to see what support we can offer your family.
